Young Sandy Springs cousins win the right to sing at Carnegie Hall

What does it feel like for a singer to step onto the stage to perform in Carnegie Hall? Two young cousins from Sandy Springs set foot in the historic New York City venue for the first time to do just that in mid-December.
Phoebe Rose Claeys, 8, and Sarah Serena Thompson, 12, were winners in the 2019 American Protégé International Vocal Competition. Winners in the competition won the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall.

Claeys admitted to being a little frightened at first as she looked out at all the people in the iconic recital hall. “But once I started singing, I was into the music. It was fun,” she said. She followed advice from the girls’ longtime instructor Adriana van Rensburg not to get distracted by the three crystal chandeliers. “She knows I like sparkly things,” added Claeys.
Thompson said she was pretty calm. “The emcee gave me good advice. ‘You’ve already won. Just have fun and enjoy singing in this beautiful hall,’ he said.”
The performances were held in Weill Recital Hall, one of three performance spaces in the 128-year-old Carnegie Hall, a world-renowned classic music venue.
Claeys, who performed on Dec. 14, chose “Matchmaker” from the musical “Fiddler on the Roof.”
The following day, Thompson took the stage to perform “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady.”
Van Rensburg accompanied both of them on the piano.
The cousins had in the audience a proud contingent of family members from Atlanta supporting them and cheering them on.
“With a full schedule of lessons and performances, driving has always been a family affair,” said Caroline Claeys Thompson, Serena’s mother. “We are lucky to have so much support.” She and her husband Mark share transportation duties with the cousins’ grandparents, Suzanne and Robert Claeys and Mark Thompson’s mother, Carole Parks. All were in New York, along with Alice Sue Claeys, Phoebe Roses’s mother, for the big event.

It was the cousins’ first time entering the singing competition, which is open to solo vocalists and vocal groups of all ages, nationalities and countries.
Claeys captured first place in the Young Singers group, ages 5-10, and Thompson took second place in the Junior level, ages 11-14.
Singers from 14 countries applied for this year’s competition: the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Georgia, China, India, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and Australia, according to the competition’s website. Taped auditions for the competition were held in June.
She taught music for 26 years in Atlanta public schools working with elementary, middle, high school and college-level students, and she also served as an adjunct professor of music at Georgia State University. She teaches in her studio in Smyrna and privately in clients’ homes.
The journey to Carnegie Hall began some years ago when the girls were not yet in grade school or even kindergarten. Claeys started taking piano lessons when she was 2 years old and voice the following year. Thompson began her studies in piano and voice at age 4. They both currently study classical and Broadway voice, piano and music theory with Van Rensburg weekly. More recently, both young sopranos have taken an interest in opera singing. The girls also take ballet lessons.
Over the course of the years, they have sung in a number of competitions in Atlanta and elsewhere. It is an experience that Van Rensburg said is important in learning discipline, focus and how to perform artistically.
“There is so much involved in teaching youngsters,” said Van Rensburg. “Even if they have good motor skills, they do not have the emotional maturity to understand the nuances and the artistry required…. Part of my work is to inspire them not only to play well, but to see what music can be.”

SUMMER PIANO ACADEMY 2015 in OXFORD
Once again, this past summer of 2015, I spent 2 weeks in Oxford attending master classes, lectures, recitals and lessons by renowned international concert pianists e.g. Sir Andras Schiff, Ivo Pogorelich, Alfred Brendl, and Marios Papodoupolos.
Outstanding participants included several finalists to this year's Leeds International (September 2015) and Chopin (October 2015) Piano Competitions. I was very impressed to hear some of the outstanding young pianists sponsored by the Lang Lang International Piano Foundation - I'm looking forward to hearing much of them in the future. |
OXFORD UNIVERSITY SUMMER PIANO ACADEMY
Adriana will once again this summer return to Oxford University for further piano studies. Late July and early August I will attend master classes, lectures and performances.
Hailed as the most significant annual musical event in Oxford and ‘an international forum to turn piano lessons into performance art’ by the New York Times, the Festival offers exclusive training opportunities for around 20 talented young pianists – selected by audition - with some of the world’s most celebrated artists and pedagogues. The Faculty is immensely distinguished - only a handful of festivals come close – and over the years many of the legendary names of the 20th century, such as Rosalyn Tureck and Maria Curcio, have made their way to Oxford to take part in the Festival, alongside virtually every significant pianist on the international arena, from Pierre-Laurent Aimard to John Lill. With Alfred Brendel as the Festival’s patron, András Schiff as President, and the Festival’s founder Marios Papadopoulos a renowned pianist himself, the bar is set very high in terms of quality and artistic integrity.
This celebration of the piano, stretched over a week at the end of July/beginning of August, combines a program of concerts in some of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Oxford - including Sir Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, the ceremonial hall of the University - with an intensive daily program of lectures and masterclasses.

PIANO PIECES FOR KIDS BY KIDS BOOK LAUNCH
February 2, 2014 at England Piano
Piano students publish their own composition book. Available on amazon.com
How the project came about
As I have been long involved with composition through my research and studies which include my first Masters dissertation on “Guided Composition” and the subsequent doctoral research on “Songwriting in Adolescence”, it seemed natural to include this component into my teaching. I have for the past number of years as Program Manager for artsAPS been involved in training teachers in “creativity infusion in the curriculum” and to this end have presented many workshops on composition for children. Knowing the benefits of composition, it seemed a natural fit to include this as a small component in the piano lesson.
Why composition?
Scientists have devised a technique that reveals the extent to which different regions of the brain cooperate during musical activities such as listening and composing. Patterns of cooperative function have been found and these patterns can be different when the same person uses different listening strategies. The amount of brain coherence increases greatly during composition, relative to listening. Composition allows children to explore creativity, while being given a foundation on which to build. The students are immersed in musical singing and playing and movement and then guided with suggestions as to the structure that is found in many classical compositions. Children are fulfilled with their own creations – some being very analytical first, followed by creativity, while others create first and then become more cognitive. Composition enhances the listening component and the theoretical aspects of music, as well as the enhancement of self-esteem as the children are delighted with their accomplishments. Composing integrates aural and written skills and gives children a sense of ownership.
How do you teach composition?
At first composition starts out as guided activities with the teacher providing a framework or template within which student can make up a melody. This is followed by identifying “motif” in larger works e.g. their repertoire or listening examples. they use the identified motif to expand and develop into melodies much along the same way Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and others did. Motifs are expanded through repetition, sequence, imitation, augmentation, diminution and inversion. Students are encouraged to use accompaniment patterns, e.g. block chords, broken chords, triad patterns etc. to compose left hand accompaniments to their melodies.
Other composition ideas are provided including story, atmosphere, theory, etc.
More about the book
This publication “Piano Pieces for Kids by Kids” is the culmination of a collection of compositions from 4-10 year olds throughout 2013. By Fall 2013 I had completed all the completed compositions students wanted to offer, typed them through music software and assembled the publication. The pieces are arranged progressively from the easiest to more advanced throughout the book. I have included short teaching notes and ideas for improvisation, accompaniment and further composition for other teachers who may use this book.
Next steps
I continue to work on composition with students. As students bring in work, we look, talk, brainstorm, come up with further ideas and students redraft, edit and proof their work. At that point I collect the composition. I hope to include more students for the 2014 publication.
Another project I am hoping to do with the teens are to assist the young composers who are already writing songs and instrumental compositions to finalize their works in print and hopefully have individuals publish their own complete books of songs and piano pieces.
